Klassic

The first ever Kara Klassic was a huge success.  Amazingly the clouds parted and we had an amazingly beautiful day at Fostoria County Club.  Great friends, great prizes, and an all around great day.  What more could a girl ask for?

We started this journey way back in January.  As soon as I was diagnosed, my brother wanted to help.  He asked me if he could do something for me that he knew how to do well.  He knows how to golf and he sure knows how to have fun, and away we ran with the idea.  We met with the new owners of Fostoria Country Club and knew it was a match from the start.

My brother is the best.  From the very start, he set a goal.  A big goal and he was dead set that we were hitting the goal.  We Wards do NOT like to fail.  He enlisted the help of our cousin Jamie and my friend Ashley and away we went.  Letters were drafted, calls were made and donations and teams flooded in.  Just weeks after we issued the call for teams, all 36 were full and we had people lined up and waiting to get in the gate.  Ok, so 144 golfers; that's big.

It was up to us to make it the best day possible for 144 golfers.  Jamie made calls, Evan spoke with every single donor, volunteers started lining up.  Thanks to an awesome family connection, national distributors are now knocking at the door.  Sam Adams Brewery, E&J Gallo Winery, Grey Goose Vodka, Big Bucket Margaritas, and the excitement was building.

We lined up volunteers this morning with door prizes, raffle tickets, silent auctions, anything you could think of.  I stood at the top of the stairs and watched 144 golfers on 72 carts speed off onto the course.  I saw 9 fellow fighter/survivors head out to their posts on the course where they would meet and greet each team.  I saw my friends pack their cameras and beers to go sell celebrity shots, bets on the green, and 50/50 tickets.  It was such an awesome feeling and I felt so overwhelmed with love and support.  And that is pretty much where I stayed for most of the day.  Overwhelmed.  All of these people are here because of me.  Whoa.

A very long day later, we had winners, winners, chicken dinners.  Raffle winners taking home golf clubs, golf bags, weekend getaways.  Silent auction winners taking home stand mixers, gift baskets, and the infamous BIG chair.  Hole prizes to those that worked hard out on the course today and cash prizes to all our winners.  A big shout out to my uncle Mike and cousin Richard O'Reilly and crew for ending up in First Place overall.

Fostoria Country Club is the bomb.  Go there, use them for your event.  You will not be sorry.  Jamie, Heather, Ashley and everyone else who had a hand in making this event happen today, you are amazing.  To our event sponsors, hole sponsors and anyone who donated to today's event, thank you for helping make today a huge success.  Everyone who came out today and donated, bought tickets, drank beer, you are the best.  Thank you.  Thank you for everything.  Thank you for your love and support and for helping me along in this journey.

And last but definitely not least, to my big brother Evan.  You are the best big brother anyone could ask for.  Thank you for being overly ambitious and sometimes borderline crazy.  Thank you for taking on this project and seeing it through to the finish.  Thank you for taking this little Saturday morning golf outing to the next level.  You are the best and I love you.

The Kara Klassic was like nothing I have ever seen before. I have been to plenty of benefits and fundraisers, but never have I seen an event where not only every single person who signed up was actually there, but where there were people actually there in case people didn't show up because they wanted to be supportive any way possible! (And that was WITH 80% chance of severe weather!) That speaks great volumes to the one and only, Miss Kara Ward.
Karma can be a great thing. Because of all of the selfless hours that you give of yourself, people want to support you in this journey. I was so glad to be able to be apart of this event and to witness all the love!
